People are an asset in your business, and with any asset that sits on your balance sheet you want to make sure that you are maintaining or servicing that asset. Well that’s what HR is about. It’s like servicing your people assets just like you would service, maintain, clean and fuel your fleet of trucks or your machinery.
Otherwise, they will either walk out the door (money down the gurgler), or, just scrape through their days as your employee and walk out the door later anyway (MORE money down the gurgler). We want you to have a great, profitable, sustainable business, and this is a crucial element:
What you can do quickly and cheaply, creating a big impact?
TALK to your people. They want to feel valued. A quick, ‘how are you?’ or ‘thanks for your effort today,’ will go a long, long way. And, mean what you say. People are intuitive and will know if you don’t actually care.
LISTEN to them. People want to be a part of the team. Plus, they probably know more about their job than you do. Hey, you might even LEARN from them.
GIVE DIRECTION. People need to know what they are supposed to do and how to do it. Don’t be afraid to coach when they need it, and praise when they are doing something well.
REWARD them – as a basic need, people want to feel they are being paid FAIRLY for what they do. But add some creative rewards in, too. A day off on someone’s birthday doesn’t cost much, but it makes people think, ‘This is a great boss to work for. They care about me.’
HAVE FUN – of course, within reason. Laughing at work and enjoying yourself is not a bad thing. People will work harder if they enjoy their workplace.
LEAD by example. Your managers will follow suit if you are walking your talk, and your people will respect you.
Sounds so simple, doesn’t it? You don’t have to go investing squillions into taking your people on overseas retreats, or double their salary every year – if you just follow these simple steps that show you care about them – you will get so much more than someone to sit in a seat. You could have an engaged and passionate employee that will go the extra mile for your company. We have used this formula with many of our clients, and it really WORKS.
